PCME is an accredited provider specializing in innovative continuing medical education solutions.
Although considerable improvements have been made in the short-term outcomes of kidney transplantation, long-term patient and graft outcomes have not improved to the same degree. In addition to patient deaths, viral infection is a major factor limiting efforts to optimize outcomes. Cytomegalovirus (CMV), a pathogen encountered frequently in solid organ transplant recipients, impacts transplantation outcomes through both direct and indirect effects. In 2009, the first comprehensive guidelines were published addressing measures to improve long-term outcomes of kidney transplantation, including immunosuppressive protocols and infection control.
This program will review individualized immunosuppressive protocols (for both induction and maintenance), and will discuss infection-control strategies for CMV. The faculty will review the new KDIGO guidelines and their use in the care of kidney transplant recipients. A case study will be presented allowing for interaction with the listeners.
