Changing the Face of Chemotherapy-induced Nausea and Vomiting
Release Date: July 6, 2009         Expiration Date: July 6, 2010

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV) remains among the most feared side effects of chemotherapy for cancer patients. Over the past two decades, advances have been made in the understanding of CINV, resulting in the recognition of various CINV types and the identification of factors that increase the likelihood of nausea and/or vomiting following chemotherapy administration. However, despite recent progress, a significant number of patients still develop CINV – particularly in the setting of delayed emesis, multicycle-multicourse chemotherapy, and in the bone marrow transplant setting. Through this event, oncology nurses will be empowered to assess a patient's risk factors, identify the different subtypes and settings of CINV, and make educated decisions to help improve patient outcomes.

The emphasis of the program will be on reviewing and discussing realistic and complex patient scenarios. Patient Vignettes discussing chemotherapy treatment and Audience Response System questions are woven throughout the program to challenge participants with clinical questions surrounding each case. The most current information on patient assessment and risk stratification, guideline-driven management, and new agents and treatment strategies will be provided as tools to improve the overall quality of life of patients.
